SURVEY TITLE: National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions

ACRONYM: NESARC

SPONSOR: National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), United States
Department of Health and Human Services.

SURVEY PURPOSE: NESARC is the primary source for information and data on the U.S.
population for: 1) alcohol and drug use; 2) alcohol and drug abuse and dependence; and 3)
associated psychiatric and other medical comorbidities.

LOCATION SAMPLED: Designed to be a representative sample of the United States Population.

YEARS SEXUAL ORIENTATION DATA COLLECTED: Wave I 2001-2002; Wave II 2004-2005.

SAMPLE SIZE: Wave I, 43,093 respondents; An attempt will be made to re-interview all 43,093 respondents during Wave 2.

METHOD OF SEXUAL ORIENTATION DATA COLLECTION: Face-to-Face, sexual orientation identity question; Flashcards, sexual attraction and sexual behavior questions.

The following questions are asked in Section 14, the Medical Conditions and Practices Section of the questionnaire.  

Question 5: And now some questions about your health and sexual practices. (SHOW
FLASHCARD 46). People are different in their sexual attraction to other people.  Which category on the card best describes your feelings? 1) only attracted to females, 2) mostly attracted to females, 3) equally attracted to females and males, 4) mostly attracted to males, 5) only attracted to males.

AND

Question 6: In your entire life, have you had sex with only males, only females, both males and
females, or have you never had sex? 1) only males, 2) only females, 3) both males and females, 4) never had sex.

AND

Question 7: Which of the categories on the card best describes you? 1) heterosexual (straight), 2) gay or lesbian, 3) bisexual, 4) not sure.
