SURVEY TITLE: National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services

ACRONYM: N-SSATS

SPONSOR: Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, United States
Department of Health and Human Services.

SURVEY PURPOSE: The National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services (N-SSATS) is an annual survey of all facilities in the United States that collects information on location, characteristics, services offered and utilization. Information from the N-SSATS is used to compile and update the National Directory of Drug and Alcohol Abuse Treatment Programs and the on-line Substance Abuse Treatment Facility Locator.

LOCATION SAMPLED: United States.

YEARS SEXUAL ORIENTATION DATA COLLECTED: 2000+.

SAMPLE SIZE: 14,503 respondents (95.9%) in 2003 out of 15,124 eligible facilities.

METHOD OF SEXUAL ORIENTATION DATA COLLECTION: Primarily mail, but also internet and telephone.

15. This question has two parts. Column A asks about the types of clients accepted into treatment at this facility.  Column Basks whether this facility offers specially designed treatment programs or groups for each type of client.  Type of Client 5. Gays and Lesbians.

RESULTS:

  • In 2000, 15.1% of facilities reported providing special services to gays and lesbians. This decreased to 12.8% in 2002 and 5.5% in 2003 (see Table of Trends as well as the 2003 Report).
